The Lay Cistercian Review publishes work rooted in lived experience, prayerful reflection, and fidelity to the Cistercian contemplative tradition. Authors are responsible for the originality, integrity, and voice of all work submitted for consideration.
Generative AI may be used by authors only in a limited and supportive role, consistent with the Review’s approach to editorial discernment. Such tools may assist the writing process but may not replace the author’s own reflection, theological engagement, or responsibility for the work.
Permitted Uses
Authors may use generative AI tools to assist with:
- grammar, spelling, and stylistic clarity
- readability or minor organizational support
- translation assistance
- citation or bibliographic checking
In all cases, these uses must remain secondary to the author’s own thinking, writing, and discernment.
Prohibited Uses
Generative AI may not be used to:
- generate original reflections, essays, prayers, poetry, or other creative content
- produce theological or spiritual interpretation in place of the author
- imitate the style or voice of specific spiritual writers or traditions
- substitute for the author’s direct engagement with Scripture, tradition, or lived experience
Disclosure
When generative AI has been used in the preparation of a submission, authors must disclose this use at the time of submission using the following statement:
“Generative AI tools were used for grammar review and stylistic clarity. All content, interpretations, and conclusions are the author’s own.”
Failure to disclose relevant use of generative AI may result in rejection of the submission or retraction after publication.
Responsibility and Review
As with the editorial review process, the use of generative AI does not confer authority or judgment. All interpretive, theological, and editorial decisions remain human and rest with the author and the Editorial Board. The Lay Cistercian Review affirms that contemplative writing arises from attention, prayer, and human reflection. These cannot be delegated to automated systems.
